!S.P. May p.61 Daniel Sears was appd admr upon the estates of these two brothers, 13 May 1747. They were styled "mariners" and probably died, or were lost while on a voyage, as 12 months were allowed to elapse before taking out letters of administration. David was probably the one mentioned by Benj. Bangs of Harwich, in his diary in 1744, as having "got home from the Spaniards." Carthagena Expedition. They perhaps went on the Louisburg Expedition in 1745, in Col Gorham's Regt, or as sailors, and never returned. In the Sears Gen'y it is stated that these two brothers went to England, possibly to recover the family estates, were officers in the Pretender's army, and both fell at the battle of Culloden, 16 Apr 1746." There was no Col Sears of Chatham and Peter Sears was not born til 1753, 7 yrs after the battle of Culloden. In the "Gen Register," IX, 134, we read, "Capt Peter Sears," of Revolutionary army, "son of Col Sears of Chatham, killed at Culloden." There is no truth to either statement. Benj. Bangs, a merchant of Harwich, was in Boston, 7 Jun 1746, and on that date enters in his diary that he had lately heard of the death of Richard and David Sears of Chatham." The news of the battle of Culloden was not received in Boston until nearly a month later, viz.: 2 Jul, and was first published in the "Boston News Letter," for Thursday, 3 Jul 1746. "A letter from Belfast, 25 April, gives undoubted intelligence of the entire defeat of the rebels on Culloden muire, on the 16th." Unless Mr bangs had a spiritual communication, he could not have heard of the brothers' death at Culloden, at the date of the entry in his diary, and I need say nothing of the improbability of two common seaman brought up in a Puritan family joining the CXatholic Army, and being commissioned as officers. The Capt Peter Sears referred to above was of Scituate, and son of Jonathan Sears of Halifax, MA, of the line of Silas, and only distantly connected with the Chatham branch. Gen Duvall, from whose "Minutes" the Register article is quoted, was a pension agent in Tallahassee, FL, and would not be likely to know any thing of the family history. I have a copy of the letter which he addressed to Mr Orin Sears of HIngham (probably the identical copy referred to in the Regiuster article), and in which he gave lists of Sears in Rev Army, quoted in Reg., and it contains not a word about "Col Sears of Chatham killed at Culloden."
