! S.P. May p. 88 Edmund Sears and his wife were admitted to the church in E. Yar., May 12, 1745. He was a sea captain during many years. It is related of him that at the time of the "Boston Tea Party," he was un- loading his vessel in the vicinity. He went on board the vessels and participated in throwing the tea overboard. Upon his return to the Cape soon after, though he had been long absent from home, on entering the house he went straight to the "bowfat," and without saying a word to any one, seized the teapot and caddy, and threw them into the garden with a crash. His astonished wife whispered to the children, "your poor father has come home crazy." He then proclaimed that from theat time henceforth none of his family were to drink tea, or wear upon their persons any articles of British manufacture. His four sons were in the Revolutionary Army, but nevertheless, when a land- ing was threatened on the Cape, he mounted his horse and galloped to the spot to offer his services. He set up the first chaise, and owned the first ingrain carpet in the town. His will, dated June 20, 1796, was witnessed by John Chapman, Peter Sears and Joseph Sears; a codicil bears no date. He mentions wife Hannah; daus. Mary Sears, Elizh. Homer, Jane Hallet, Temperance Clark and Hannah Sears; and sons Christopher, Elkanah, Edmund and Joshua.

!S.P. May p.146 Edmund Sears was admitted to the Ch., Dennis 24 Jul 1809. He was a soldier in Lieut. Micajah Sears' company, and on the alarm at Dart- mouth and Falmouth, 6 Sep 1778, marched and did 13 days' service. His will, dated 1820, was proved 1832, and mentions wife, Hannah; children, Sally Crowell, Zerviah Howes, Molly A. Howes, Hannah Howes, Priscilla Howes, Edmund, Jacob, Judah and Paul Sears. !S.P. May hand note p.147 Early in the century Mr Edmund Sears of E Dennis ran a Boston packet called the "Betsy" for a number of years. Later, his two sons, Judah and Jacob, ran a packet schoonercalled the "Sally & Betsy", named for their two wives. This was previous to 1828. About that time Capt Dean Sears ran a Boston packet schooner called the "Eliza & Betsy", and at the same time Capt Joseph H Sears was running a sloop called the "Combine." In 1833 two new schooners, the "David Porter" and the "Combine" were put on this line, the latter seeming to be a popular name in this locality. The old vessels were withdrawn, and Capt Dean Sears commanded the "David Porter," and Capt Joseph H Sears the "Combine." The former continued to run as a packetafter all the others had given up the business, and was not withdrawn until about 1874. She had, however, several masters. Capt Dean Sears left packeting to command ships. Captains Constant Sears, Enos Sears, Stillman Kelly (from 1840 to 1849), and ______ Sears had charge of her at various times. The "Combine" had a much shorter career as a packet. Capt Joseph H Sears also left her to take charge of ships in the foreign trade , and to run and manage them.
