May p.418 Removed to Sidney, IA, about 1855; was a lawyer and District Judge for several terms; was an Elder in the Presbyterian Church; had a high reputation in the county, and died much lamented. !BIOGRAPHY: E-mail from Frederick "Fritz" W Lehmann IV, wustl.edu, to Ray Sears; 1860; Letter dtd 6 Jan 1995; ; copy in poss of Ray Sears; Dear L Ray Sears, I am not related to the Sears family, but the Lehmann family of Des Moines and Saint Louis has continued to name our members "Sears" in appreciation of a benefactor in the last century. Some time after 1860, I believe, Judge Epenitus (sp? name?) Sears had a farm near Tabor, Iowa (or Indianola?). My great-grandfather Frederick William Lehmann I was then a run-away teenager from a poor family in Cincinnati who had wandered as a vagabond, shepherd and farm hand through Missouri and Iowa. Judge Sears took him on as a farm hand, and finding him bright, encouraged him to read books and in particular law books. Later Judge Sears helped, to become a lawyer. My great-grandfather was successful, and became twice president of the American Bar Association and Solicitor General of the US under Taft. In gratitude for Judge Sears' help, he named his oldest son "Sears" Lehmann; that son named his oldest "Sears" too, my late uncle. A new "Sears" may be on the way.
