!Barbara Sears McRae Alfred writes of his brother " Married Melvina Lockwood in Ohio. He enlisted in 3d N. Jersey in April 1861, was wounded by a shell splinter on the knee in the battle of Gaines Mill. His death was traced to this wound, which seemed to heal in two weeks and he resumed duty in the field. After serving out his three years, he was stricken with paralysis and the wounded leg was lame till his death in 1868. He died of a second stroke of paralysis, by which he became a helpless invalid for several months."
