!S.P. May p.428 George Sears was born in Ridgefield, CT, and educated in the district school except two terms, when he attended a select school for the study of Latin and the higher mathematics. At the age of fifteen he taught school winters, working upon his father's farm summers, but devoting all his spare time to study. About 1837-38 he removed to Hopewell, NY, and was that year appointed instructor in Genesee Wesleyan School, Lima, NY. In March, 1850, he reomoved to Newark, NJ, to take a position in Newark Wesleyan Academy (now Newark Academy.) In Jan, 1855, he was elected Vice-Principal of the High School there, and in 1859 Superintendent of the Public Schools, and in 1860 Secretary of Board of Education, continuing in these offices till Sep 1877, "having been, during eighteen years, as honest, faithful and devoted a servant as ever served the city of Newark." Resigning these positions on account of ill-health, he died 17 Nov 1877.

!S.P. May p.425 lives in Bennington; Ben R. Sears, Jr death date !BRS He moved to NYC in 1887 where he worked as a doorman and later general salesman for wholesale and dry goods firm of James H Dunham & Co., corner of Worth and Broadway. He and his wife returned to live at the Winslow home in Bennington on 1 May 1924. He died after an illness following a stroke. In the Bennington Banner it says he married Nettie Joy, daughter of Edwin Joy and also Nettie L. Keys. From a letter: Dear Harry and Eleanor - The August 29th, 1928 Banner records the death of George B Sears. Among other things the obituary mentioned his cheerful disposition. He is survived by his wife, one son Duane H Sears of Brooklyn, one grandaughter and three grandsons.

!S.P. May p.490 George Sears emigrated with his father to CA in 1850, and was a clerk in Columbia co., till 1857, when he entered college at Oakland for 4 years' term. In 1861, he enlisted in 4th Regt CA Inf'y, and in 1863, in 8th Regt CA Inf'y; served to the close of the war, and mustered out at Fort Point, with rank of 1st Lt.; was on duty at Fort Point, and on provost duty at San Francisco throughout the war. He was engaged in mercantile business in Contra Costa co., CA, under firm name of Penniman & Sears, several years, when he removed to Santa Cruz and erected a saw-mill, which he sold out, and engaged in cattle business. Later he removed to Portland, OR; went into the grocery business, and kept the "Dexter Livery-Stable." He was elected Assessor in 1878, leading his ticket by several hundred votes; and in 1882, Sheriff of Multnomah co. by an unprecedented majority, discharging the duties of that office with his characteristic energy and ability, meeting the approbation of all good citizens. At the time of the last Indian war in Eastern Oregon, Mr Sears enlisted a company of 100 men, and was chosen captain. Having many personal friends, he is a strong man in his party, is a good political manager, and an honorable politician. He is noted for his liberality, and is the personification of good humor and geniality. Is Great Sachem, Imp. Order Red Men of Oregon; Sec'y Harmony Lodge, F.A.M.; Post Com. "George Wright" Post No. 1, G.A.R.; D.D.Grand Chan. Kts. of Pythias; Treas. No. 11, A.O.O. Foresters; Treas. Portland Fire Dept.; Pres. Tiger Fire Eng. Co.; and member Board Portland Fire Delegates. Had Son and 3 dau.
