Judah Sears' house at "Punkhorn," Harwich, now West Brewster, was standing recently on the old raod from the mill brook to Dennis east of the house of Jeremiah Walker, and on the northside of this was a very ancient structure, now much dilapidted, and has been said to be the oldest house in Brewster. It is two stories in front, and one in the rear, and was occupied about 1863, by Capt. David Sears in Dennis, No. 1812, he swivel maker. It is probable that the house of Capt. John Sears in Dennis, is the oldest of the Sears houses now remaining, and that of Joshua Sears in Brewster, the next; Judah Sears' being the third in point of age. In the locality known as "Punkhorn," the manufacture of lampblack was carried on to some extent formerly, and a cart drawn by one ox, used for transporting the lampblack, was known as "the Punkhorn stage." In the allotment of pews in the 2d Ch., Yar., Aug 24, 1761, Mr. Judah Sears had 1/4 right hand door, at L 53 10 0 old tenor. He removed to Rochester, MA with his family, and joined the church there in 1769, being then "near 70 years old." He was chosen Tything man in Roch., in 1764-7. His will dated Feb 5, 1773, was proved Sep 2, 1776, and mentions his wife Mary sons, Alden, Nathan, Judah, David and Richard; and daus. Ann Gage, wife of Anthony Gage; Mary Hatch, wife of Jona Hatch; Alice Church, wife of Charles Church, and Sarah Sears. Judah Sears was Execr.

!S.P. May p.388 Judah Sears removed to Boston in 1835, and became a well-known builder and contractor, continuing in business till 1870, when he was compelled to retire on account of the distressing complaint, asthma, with which he had been afflicted for fifty years. He erected some of the best buildings in Boston; the Chickering Piano Factory, and Gilmore's Coliseum. He had a peculiar fancy for building high steeples. He will be remembered by his associates as a man of large and muscular build, and reckless of danger, of which many incidents could be related. He was one of six to organize the Methodist Society in South Boston, of whom he was the last survivor. Those who have heard the story of their early struggles, will know how much he loved, by what he gave. He was a Rep. in Mass Leg, 1859 and 1860, and died venerable in character and years.
