!S.P. May p.347 William Sears and wife removed from Dover,VT, in Feb 1811, and settled in the "Holland Land Purchase," at Carroll, now Kiantone, Chatauqua co., NY. They traveled 500 miles with all their household goods upon a sled drawn by a yoke of oxen; were 29 days on the road, and took up land in the then wild country, surrounded by tribes of Seneca Indians, [handnotes]where he resided until his death. Some years after his settlement he opened a tavern in his dwelling house on the east side of the road, a little south of the small run in village of Kiantone. He subsequently built a two story front to his house, and sold his tavern, and a part of the farm, after which he built a large two story tavern house on the north side of the litle run of water, and the west side of the road, in which he died. His heirs sold the tavern stand, which is now owned by Aaron J Phillips. No tavern is kept there. The village of Kiantone was at one time called Searsville, from Wm Sears the first settler at that place. In 1830 a meeting house,(Congregational,) was built on a site given the society by Widow Sears. W Sears was chosen Com.of Highways, in Ellicott in 1813. The first town meeting in Carroll was held at his house in 1826, and he was chosen Inspector of Schools, and Pound Keeper. At the "Old Settlers" festival in 1874, there was on exhibition a portrait of Mrs Ruby Sears, wife of William Sears. !Mary Huson-Wm had a son Resolved, b. 6 apr 1803
