686. Barnabas Sears Lt Col (Roland , Joseph , Silas , Richard ) was born 20 Nov 1743 in Hardwick, MA. was buried in , 326.

S.P. May p.185 Barnabas Sears was a farmer, and lived on part of the old
homestead in Hardwick.
The farm was sold in 1777 to Rev Samuel Dennis, and he removed to the adjoin-
ing town of Greenwich, his wife being dismissed to the church there 13 Sep 1779.
He taught school in 1772, - was on "Committee of Correspondence" in 1777, and
a member of Constitutional Conventin, 1779-80.
His military service during the Revolution was abundant and conspicuous. He
was sergeant of the Minute Men, marched in Capt. Simon Hazeltine's Co. on
Lexington alarm, 19 Apr 1775, and was allowed for 150 miles travel, and 16 days
service L1.19.11.
He returned and assisted Capt Samuel Billings in organizing a company for the
regular service, of which he was com. Lt, 23 May 1775, and was captain of a
company in the camp at Dorchester Heights, 15 Feb 1776. He was elected Major of
Col Holman's Regt., 26 Jun 1776, and served as Lt Col in the three months
service, 12 Aug to 15 Nov 1781, 3 mos., 10 days' service, and 140 miles travel.
In the troublous times which followed the Revolution, like many other officers
and privates, he was concerned in the unlawful effort of relief, styled "Shay's
Rebellion."
His offense was pardoned by the government, and he subscribed the oath of
allegiance in 1787.

Barnabas married Rachel Bullard on 1 Nov 1764 in Barre, MA. Rachel was born about 1746 in . She died 30 Jun 1811.

alarm, in Capt John Black's Co., 20 Apr 1775, 180 miles, and 11 days' service,
L1.6.6 1/2; served in Capt Benj. Nye's Co. for assistance to Northern army,
26 Sep 1777; 29 days' service and 128 miles' travel; 27 Mar to 29 Jul 1778, he
was in Capt Mareau's Co., in Col. Stearns' Regt of Guards at Cambridge, "guard-
ing troops of the Convention," and was Sergeant in Lt Wm Muzzy's Co., Col Nathan
Sparhawk's Regt., from 5-15 Jul 1778, at the barracks in Rutland; 10 miles
travel.
He was blind for many years previous to his death.
His widow resided with her daughter Polly, and her name appears as a US
pensioner in 1840, then of Barre, ae. 84.
They were worthy, industrious people.
The children are perhaps not placed in order of birth.

Elisha married Hannah Sears, daughter of Silas Sears and Deborah Buck, on 31 Oct 1771 in Hardwick, MA. Hannah was born 1756 in . She died 20 Oct 1842 in Barre, MA and was buried in , 337.

S.P. May p.187(No 332) Stephen Sears and his wife Lydia were admitted to full communion in the 2d Ch., Yar., 20 Mar 1774, and he was chosen Deacon, 9 Mar 1789. He was active in town and church affairs. Stephen Sears of Dennis, "gentleman," made his will 15 Dec 1815 (1814?) and mentions wife Martha, daus. 699. Richard Sears Sergt (Silas , Joseph , Silas , Richard ) was born about 1748 in Hardwick?, MA. He died after 1 Jun 1814 in Hoosick?, NY and was buried in , 336.

S.P. May p.188 The children may have been born in different order.
Richard Sears was probably born in Hardwick,or in the adjoining town of
Greenwich, MA, but I do not find his name on record in either place prior to
his marriage in 1771.
Richard Sears, from Ashfield, was a Corporal in Capt. Isaac Gray's co. in Col.
Jon. Brewer's Regt., 1775, which fought at Bunker's Hill; and Sergeant in Capt.
Abner Pomroy's Co. in Col. Ezra Wood's Regt.; marched into NY state, 160 miles
travel, 7 mos., 27 days' service, wages L15.16.0.
Family tradition says he was at the battle of Bunker's Hill, and his grandson
Walter S. Sears, of Adrian, MI, possesses the poweder horn which he carried on
that memorable occasion.
After the Revolution he removed to Hoosick, NY, and is supposed to have died
there.
He was a member of Federal Lodge No. 33 of Mark Masons, at Hoosick, 1 Jun
1814. Later he removed to Schoharie, NY, where he died 6 Aug 1814, at the
residence of his son Silas Sears. He was a wagonmaker by trade, and a
Methodist in religion. His first wife, Mary Lee, owing to hardships during the
war, became broken in mind and body.
His grandson, Rev Hiram Sears of Effingham, IL, and of the Seamen's Bethel
Home, Cleveland, OH,. earnestly requests any person having knowledge of Richard
Sears or of either of his children to communicate with him.

Family tradition says he was at the Battle of Bunker Hill, and his great
grandson, Henry B Sears, of Toledo, OH possesses the powder horn which he
carried on that memorable occasion. It was given to Henry B Sears by his Uncle
Walter of Adrian, MI.
According to the New York census of 1790 A Richard Sears of Montgomery Town,
Ulster co, NY was head of family with 2 free white
males over 16, 4 free white females inc. head of fam 4 white males under 16 no
"all other persons," and no slaves.

Richard married (1) Mary Lee, daughter of Abner Lee and Sarah Merrick, on 29 Dec 1771 in Hardwick, [19 Dec], MA. Mary was born 1748 in . She died about 1790/1792.
