Eighth Generation

6339. David B Sears (Reuben , Nancy , Christopher , Edmund , Paul , Paul , Richard ) was born 14 Feb 1847 in W Brewster, MA. was buried in , 2692.

S.P. May p.516 David Sears is connected with the house of John H Pray, Sons &
Co., wholesale and retail carpet dealers in Boston. Both his daughters are
fine musicians, and have played in public since they were eight years of age.
From the "Boston Journal" of 30 Jun 1885, I clip:
"Tussle with a Burglar. He enters a south end residence, but is pithced
headlong from a window.
"Mr David B Sears, who lives at 58 Chester square, had a lively tussle with a
burglar early Friday morning, and succeeded in throwing him from the chamber
The robber fell heavily to the brick yard below, breaking his leg and
stunning him. He was carried off by two confederates who were waiting for him,
and all three are still at large.
Mr Sears and his wife occupy a room on the first floor, facing Northampton
street. He is usually a heavy sleeper, but Friday morning he awoke suddenly
and saw a man creeping stealthily through the window. He had climbed up from
the yard by means of a trellis, and was crawling noiselessly into the room when
Mr Sears saw him. The latter sprang from his bed, and the burglar arose to
defend himself. Mr Sears struck out with both fists, and plkanted them
squarely in the burglar's face. The force of the blow was sufficient to knock
him headlong through the open window.
There was a dull thud, and when Mr Sears looked out he saw the fellow lying
where he fell, groaning as if in great pain. At that moment two confederates
looked through the gate, but dodged back when they saw Mr Sears. But a moment
later, having assured themselves probably that he had no fire-arms, they rushed
in to where their wounded pal lay and dragged him out of the yard. This was at
2:30 o'clock. Mr Sears called for the police, but as no officer came round he
went to bed again.
An hour later later an officer saw tracks where some one had been dragged
through the street, and following them found a man lying on the sidewalk on
Camden street, and asked him what he was doing there. He replied that he had
been on a spree, and had fallen and broken his leg. The officer felt of the
limb and assured himself that it was really broken. His charitable instinct
led him to go for an ambulance.
Neighbors who had been watching this littel episode say that the officer had
been gone but a few minutes, when two men drove up hastily with a horse and
buggy, and lifting the helpless man into the carriage, drove off at a furious
gate. When the officer came back with the ambulance, he hunted in vain for the
unfortunate individual whose leg was broken.
The burglars were afterwards arrested, and are now serving terms in State's

- A pleasant day - temperature 60 deg. Leslie Sears died suddenly- Mar 23. He was employed in the parks division of the Metropolitan District Commission for 20 years prior to his retirement 2 years ago when he and his wife moved to the old homestead in East Dennis. We worked together on many engineering projects and I shall miss his contact when on the cape.

Mom says grandpa was a very quiet man. Once when she rode down to the Cape
with him from Boston for a weekend (before she and Dad were married) he only
said a few words during the whole trip. They rented an apartment after they
lost the family house in _________. He would have been a member of the Masonic Lodge there.

She also told me Grandpa was very interested in softball and that so was
Harriet. That may be how they met? From the Campus Echo Vol 1, No 3,
E Greenwich, RI Jun 1911 where he attended prep school:
"On May 5, The LaSalle Academy team defeated the Academy team on the homefield. Sears pitched a splendid game for the Academy, striking out 16 men and allowing only 4 hits, but poor support lost the game."

"On May 10, the Academy team defeated the Business Men's team, in a ten inning battle, by a score of 9-7.
Sears pitched fine ball and had his opponents under control throughout the
game. Heavy hitting was the feature of the contest."

"In a well played game at East Greenwich yesterday, the Academy defeated Rogers High of Newport by the score of 8 to 6.
Lyon and Sears for East Greenwich and Martin and Wilks for Newport did good
work at the bat."
