!S.P. may p.65 m. 2d Alice Phinney !Esther A Savage(contrib by Nancy Otis) in the Connecticut Nutmegger, Dec 1992, p.362-368 "Notes on Cape Cod, New York and Connecticut Surnames HAMBLIN, SEARS, CROSBY, BARBOUR" Amos Otis (p.533) records that an Eleazer HAMBLIN b. Barnstable MA 22 Aug 1699 m. Sarah SEARS of harwich, to which town they moved, and they had children: Barnabas, 1719; Sarah, 1720/21; Eleazer, 1723. Otis then states that he married again and had other children in Harwich of which he had no record, and that his names "disappears in Harwich about 1740." Eleazar HAMBLIN (Adams, p. 122) was descended from Isaac(3), Eleazer(2), James(1) HAMBLIN of Barnstable. His wife Sarah, Adams tells us, was a daughter of Silas and Sarah (CROSBY) SEARS, b Yarmouth 3 Apr 1697. After his marriage to Sarah in 1718 Eleazer moved to Harwich where he was called "Yeoman" (perhaps a trader). Adams is in error, as is Otis, in stating that Eleazer HAMBLIN married a second time. Barnstable Vital Records show that Alice PHINNEY m another Eleazer HAMBLIN, who became his second wife on 10 Dec 1724, the first wife having been her sister. Family records for the Eleazer HAMBLIN who m Sarah SEARS in 1718 are to be found in what is now Carmel, Putnam co, NY (Pelletreau, p.281): "The town of Carmel includes the southern half of Lots 5 and 6 of the Philips Patent... the earliest account of a settlement in this town is derived from the HAMBLIN fmaily. In the year 1739 Eleazer HAMBLIN with his family left Cape Cod to seek a home in New York. (bro-in-law, James SEARS, No. 139 RIN2514 and Benj. SEARS, No.50 RIN2506 also headed west to Southeast, NY in the 1640s) On his way he stopped at the house of John HAZEN in Norwich, CT. He concluded to leave his family there and to go forward himself to find a suitable place for settling. On his return he found that his daughter, Sarah (ae 19), had married Caleb HAZEN, the son of the host. His son-in-law went with him and both settled in what is now the town of Carmel." Before the Revolution(Pelletreau, p.249) Carmel as a village had no existence. Land was held by tenants in large farms who paid yearly rents to the Philipse family or their agent. Pelletreau notes that many of the earliest settlers had come from Cape Cod. The 1975 index (prepared by Marion Baker) to Pelletreau yields numerous Cape Cod surnames. The first settlers of the area around Carmel made their own arrangements with the Indians for land in which to live. Later this land was surveyed in order to yield taxes. There was a great deal of trouble about this in all of southeastern New York some years before the Revolution. Increasing confrontations between the British and the American colonists added fuel to the fires. Religious dissension was also a factor in their churches. Lot 6 was divided into farms on which people had already been living, in 1762. In 1771 (Pelletreau, p.289) a survey was made "for more effectually collecting his Majesty's quit rents." This survey "crossed Fish Brook where Dea Hamblin's saw mill formerly stood, at 294 James Sear's house 8 ch to the right, at 308 Eleazar Hamblin's 6 ch to the right." The entire Lot 6 was partitioned in 1771 among the heirs of Philip Philipse, who had died in 1768. When questioned the Indian Chief, Nimham, said that all the Indians in the Philipse Patent had abandoned it long before 1756 (Pelletreau, p.121). Nimham and others of his tribe fought in the Revolution on the American side, and Nimham was killed. The first settlers early founded a church society known as the Church at West Phillipi (Pelletreau, p. 306). By 1752 the society was bearing one third of the salary of John Davenport, the minister for them and for other churches, including one in the near-by town of Southeast. These churches were Congregational. Old Gilead, as the church came to be called, remained Congregational until some time before the Revolution, when it was dissolved, later to become organized as Presbyterian in 1792. The people of Carmel wanted a church of their own. In 1756 they issued a call to the Rev Ebenezer KNIBLOE who had recently come from Scotland. The first deacons of the Old Gilead Church were Ebenezer Hamblin and Thomas Crosby. The Rev. Knibloe carefully kept records during the three years he spent with this church. They were used by Pelletreau, and preserved in his history. Knibloe lived with the Crosby family while he was in Carmel. He went next to Amenia, NY, where he spent the rest of his life and was well-known in the NY-CT border area which included Salisbury and Sharon, CT (See "Litchfield co History") It was here that Eleazer Hamblin went to live, some time before the Revolution. He left a will dated 19 Dec 1768 in Sharon, CT where he says he is "of Salisbury". The records of his death and that of his wife Sarah are here (Van Alstyne), Eleazer's on 31 Oct 1771, and Sarah's on 6 Feb 1785. Both were buried in the Sharon Burying Ground. The 1768 will named the following children: Barnabas, Saran Hazen, Eleazer, Reuben, David, Hannah(provided for, for life), Rebeckah, and Desier. To Grace L Knox (now deceased), I owe research on the Hamblin family in the CT State Library. I shall always be grateful for the intelligent searches she made for me, which opened several new paths for further study. There were other Hamblins in Sharon, CT, most from Wareham, MA ("History of Litchfield co, CT", p. 578) and also records of the Rev Ebenezer Knibloe are found there. In the Carmel area, the Rev Ebenezer Knibloe oerformed the marriage of Thankful Hamblin and John BARBOUR, 16 Sep 1756, in the first year of his ministry there (Pelletreau, p.309) Thankful was thought by some researchers to have been a daughter of Eleazer Hamblin, but his failure to name her in his will seems to indicate that she must have come from another HAMBLIN family. I think it is quite possible that she was the daughter of Israel Hamblin (Otis, p. 527), by his second wife Bathsheba BAKER, whose son Israel Hamblin (b 13 Feb 1725) was named an executor of hte will of John Barbour of Ridgefield and called "son-in-law"; he was the brother of the Thankful Hamblin b 29 Dec 1739 and it seems likely that she could have been the step-daughter of John Barbour of Ridgefield. The young couple who were married in 1756 were both very young, 17, but since they had bene living in the same household it may have seemed best for them to marry. No other possibility for a father of Thankful is to be found in records from the area around Carmel in 1756. The names of children given in the 1768 will of Eleazer Hamblin indicate that the three oldest who came with him to settle in New York remained in the NY-CT border area; records for all three exist there.
