!S.P. May p.488 Mr Sears studied at Waterville, ME, and Amherst, MA; was a teacher, and Principal of Gallia Academy, Gallipolis, OH, for 11 years, and of Elgin Academy 11 years, when he retired, and now resides in Chicago, IL, engaged in real estate business. Prof and Mrs Sears took charge of Elgin Academy under unfavorable circumstances. The attendance had been low; the growing popularity of the public schools interfering with its prosperity; a debt was hanging over it, and the enthusiasm of its friends had wanted. They brought to the work jsut the wualities needed; were uick to percieve what to do, and proceeded tothe work inhand with directness and energy. Teh debt was paid, the fgrounds improved, the students came in greater numbers, the school was advertised, the alumni interested, and the students themselves began to help the work of byuilding up. The school grew to number more than 200 students; each year something was added tro the apparatus and to the grounds; each year a larger class was graduated, and the school was elevated to a standing among the best in the State. Prof and Mrs Sears won the confidence of the community, and compelled the respect and love of all with whom they were associated. As teachers, they were eminently successful; and as business managers, they succeeded beyond expectation.
