4367. Theodore Crosby Sears Hon (Lewis , Comfort , James , Silas , Silas , Richard ) was born 4 Aug 1828 in Danbury, CT. He died 8 Nov 1898 in Lakeview, WA and was buried in Tacoma Cem, 1714.

S.P. May p.431 Theodore Sears was educated at the public school in his native
village and at the Academy in Danbury; entered Amherst College 1848. Failing
health compelled him to leave before graduation, but the college gave him his
degree in course.
He studied law at Albany, NY, and after graduating was admitted to the bar,
and practiced there 3 years, at Cleveland a short time, and afterward in New
York city till 1864, when he removed to Kansas. President Lincoln appointed
him Provost Marshall of the Southern District, which office he held until the
close of the war. Was State Senator for 2 years from 1870. In 1872 he was
appointed attorney-general for the Missouri, Kansas and Texas railroad, which
position he held till 1881, when the railroad was sold to another company. He
then went to New York for a short time, and thence to Washington Ter., and is
now employed as counsel for the North Pacific railroad, and resides in Tacoma.

Theodore married Elizabeth H Hoyt, daughter of Starr Hoyt and Sally Maria Nichols, on 27 Oct 1851 in New York city, NJ. Elizabeth was born 8 Aug 1829 in Bethel, Litchfield co, CT. She died 5 Jan 1886 in Elmira, Chemung co, NY and was buried 7 Jan 1886 in Woodlawn Cem, Elmira, NY.

When but a boy, he obtained a clerkship in a dry goods store; removed in 1818
to Sandusky, OH, and commenced business on his own account, dealing in furs and
trading with the Indians.
In 1826, hemoved to Buffalo, NY, and became interested in the forwarding
business, owned two warehouses, and a number of steamers and sailing vessels
plying on the lakes.
He was a strong advocate of temperance, and worked for the cause; he was the
first owner to prohibit both the use and carrying of liquirs on board of his
boats.
He was also largely interested in mining, and at the age of 34 had
accumulated what was then considered a large fortune.
He was one of the founders of St John's Episcopal Church, in Buffalo.
In 1851, he retired from business, and removed to Brooklyn, NY, and thence,
in 1857, to a farm near Paterson, NJ.
In 1867, he removed to Montclair, NJ, where he died in 1870.

Richard married Sophia Stone, daughter of David Stone and Hannah Bellows, on 9 Jun 1834 in Dayton, OH. Sophia was born 20 Mar 1808 in Walpole, NH.

engaged in farming and mercantile pursuits until 1839, when he went to
Janesville, WI, continuing in same business. In 1860, he removed to Denver,
CO, and in addition to his mercantile business traded largely with the Indians.
In 1867, he took a stock of goods to Elizabethtown, NM, but his health
failing, he returned to Denver in 1871, where he continued to reside until his
death in 1881.
