!JAM Traveled from VT to the Great Lakes region, and studied law for a while in Peoria, IL, but did not stay long enough to graduate, and eventually worked his way down the Mississippi River to New Orleans, teaching and doing odd jobs along the way. After his wife died he took his daughter to his sister's home and went back to New Orleans and boarded a ship for San Francisco, the "Dalmatia", where he was in charge of cargo on board for the firm of Knowles and Noels. By 1858, he had moved from San Francisco to Mariposa, CA, where he was listed as a lawyer. He eventually remarried to Anna who was from England, and they ran a boarding house in Mariposa, but had no other children. About 1862 he sent for his daughter and she came to CA by wagon train.
