!S.P. May p.247 Thomas Sears removed to Boston, and engaged in business as a merchandise broker and auctioneer, making a specialty of groceries and fruit, selling from the wharf and vessel. He was one of the prominent citizens of South Boston, (at that time a beaut- iful and favorite portion of the city,) but died in the prime of manhood. For years he had been marked with the seal of consumtion, and no one knew it better than he, but he fought it, inch by inch, to the very last. Hs last sale was in 1843, when the old brig "Pleiades," belonging to the Peabody's, just returned from a pepper voyage, was advertised by TW Sears & Co., at the head of India wharf. The friends of Sears endeavored to persuade him not to attempt the sale in person, but he did, and his voice could hardly be heard as he leaned against the bulwarks, and told off the bids. Though dying atthe age of thirty-one, Mr Sears had established the reputation of possessing abilities of the highest order in his profession, and gave promise of a very brilliant future. Many are the stories that are told of his sense of humor, and his quick repartee, but he had finer traits of character, which formed a strong background and support to his external accomplishments. At heart he was deeply religious and devotional, as may be seen in several prayers which he wrote, and which were printed in the "Christian World." But the quality that most endeared him to his friends was his sensitive sympathy for others. Generous from his sense of human brotherhood, he was also just from a sense of duty, and in winning men's love, he failed not to win their respect.
